Chickens and Labs

May we be excused and head out?

Unfortunately, it was a long, long day waiting for Miss Elsie to have her turn playing in the Lower 40. Hunting labs and chickens are a much friendlier mix with a little bit o' chicken wire between them.

Admittedly, though, once this year we mistakenly let her out when the girls were sunning themselves outside in the flower beds.  She stood on the front porch and had an absolute barking fit, running this way and that on the porch, trying to get our attention.  It wasn't even a near miss - she didn't touch them! For that, she was rewarded with many accolades, proclamations of her superior behavior, and a peanut butter treat.  From the good bag on top of the refrigerator. But we're not pushing our luck.

The Beginnings of a Fabulous Salad

Red cabbage...one of my new favorites.  Thrown together with shredded carrots, raisins, fresh pineapple, and a little poppyseed dressing, you can't go wrong!

And the color?  Can't be beat.  I think I feel healthier just looking at it.  =)

Home Row

Translation:  "Sometimes life gets in the way of Home Row."

Honestly, it's been crazy, crazy, crazy around here.  As in, insane, and somehow I've missed my old friends asdfjkl;!  I need Home Row!

Home Row is a good thing.  And my Home Row is more than just keys...it is time at home, time with my man, connecting with my kids, connecting with friends, good food, laughter, catching up on chores, kissing the furry one's head, and an empty laundry room.  Oh, and sleeping.  Long and peaceful sleeps, the kind where you wake up feeling rested.  Remember that kind of sleep???!

I'm thankful for every one of those things that I enjoyed in small doses this weekend.

Rhodies

They're out.  Everywhere.  And gorgeous.

Haystack Rock

Beachgoers in the Northwest all know this landmark.  There is nothing quite like Haystack Rock up close and personal!

This time, however, there were thousands of blue sail jellyfish washed up on Cannon Beach.  They were fascinating, squishy creatures.

Nurses' Week

For the first time ever, nurses in the Brain Institute were honored with a lunch at a very nice restaurant - during the day, to boot! After years of working at various hospitals and receiving thanks through mugs, ice cream, general emails, a piece of candy, nothing, a lectureship, a card, and little things here and there, this was a real treat.  We left feeling greatly appreciated!

The steelhead was exceptional. =)

Roasted Yellow Beets

Well, yes, the beets looked a bit, um, unusual.  But roasted in parchment paper with a little olive oil and served with balsamic vinaigrette - what a treat!

(And yes, I had to spellcheck vinaigrette. I wasn't even close.)

Delights For This Mom

It was a lovely weekend!  We worked in the yard, repotted plants, picked fresh flowers for the table outside, hiked in the woods and even danced in the kitchen. =)

But of course, the highlight was a call from the boy in Brooklyn and dinner out with the daughter in Portland.  I love my kids more than life itself!

Treats?

Chicken Rule #5: Unless you're sleeping or roosting, keep your eyes out for tasty treats. They're simply everywhere if you just pay attention.

$

Not just any chocolate bar from Brooklyn.  It held a golden ticket...a personal signed check for $2,000,000.

And for a millisecond, she thought it was real.

A New Generation Launched

Graduation was marked with the usual pomp and circumstance, with tassels and cords and regalia and music and enough formality to bring tears to my eyes.

What a thrill to see our youngest finish college!  We are so thankful for the woman she has become - she has truly been a gift to us, bringing us joy beyond measure. But we are now done raising her, and the ceremony officially marked it.  As parents we will be here to cheer and love all of our kids - our own and those we "borrowed" - but they are launched and headed out into the world.

Where have the years gone?

And what in the world are we supposed to DO now??!
